The tab key is used to make the cursor go to wherever you want on the line. This eliminates using multiple spaces, and prevents uneven spacing. Read the Word help, there are settings available to control how far each press goes. It is very useful if you regularly type similar letters or other documents, you can set up tab spacing in the template for the document and each time you use it the documents will all space the same.
